Last fall I heard about an organization called Heels For Combat Boots, which helps veterans with PTSD/TBI. I thought it was a great cause and began following a few of their pages. When the chapter leader for my state recommended me to the membership director, who got in contact with me, I just couldn't say no. So I applied and I am proud to say that I am now a member. This is a great opportunity, and I am elated.
Heels For Combat Boots, or HFCB for short, was officially established in Feb. of 2014, by a kind, amazing woman name Kati Sorensen, aka Riskay Business, with the goal of assisting our servicemen and women with PTSD/TBI (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder/Traumatic Brain Injury). The organization has spread world wide, with the national chapter being based in South Carolina. Many people think only of the wounds that can be seen--amputations, bullet wounds, burns--and often ignore the unseen scars that war can leave on those who are there. This organization aims to help those forgotten or ignored, those who need help adjusting to daily civilian life, who need treatment and care, whose conditions--visible or not--can get in the way of everyday tasks. HFCB members help raise awareness and funds to help these brave men and women.
This is a great opportunity for me, not because of financial gain (which I won't have from this) or publicity, but because I get to use my hobby and my love of vintage gear to help people who risked their lives for my freedom. I get to volunteer to do something amazing, and bring my kids up in a community of other strong, philanthropic women who are doing the same work. I get to show my family that there are always ways to help. That, to me, is a great opportunity.
I am so grateful to be able to help HFCB in their mission, and I am honored to be one of their members. My mission is slightly changing, though I'm sticking to my roots. I'm still all for body acceptance and loving yourself, but you may see more posts about mental health (which is part of you!) and new posts about the HFCB mission.
